Congratulations to our boys on being MCBA Fall 13/14U Champs and on winning the 4th Annual Batten Down the Hatches Baseball Tournament Silver Division.

13U Rockville Rockets Travel Baseball

The Rockville Rockets are a travel youth baseball team based in Rockville, MD.
We compete in the MCBA (Montgomery County Baseball Association) league.

Our goal is to develop players into confident and competitive
baseball players who enjoy playing baseball together.

We challenge our players to work hard and provide them with the instruction and tools to be successful. We believe confidence comes from hard work and doing things the right way, so we focus on doing the little things right.

Team Goal: Our goal as a team is to play competitive baseball and compete for our league championship.

Player Goal: Our goal for our players is to develop them, keep them healthy and prepare them for the next level while having fun.

What We ask of Our players:

Effort and Attitude. We want positive players who will work hard.

Focus. Players are expected to come to practice focused. We expect drills to be done with a focus on improving.

About the 13U Rockville Rockets:

We are based out of Rockville, MD and compete in the MCBA league and tournaments. In the spring, we will play 30-40 games. Our goal is to develop each player and as a team to compete at a high level.

Developing Players:

Each player on our team needs to be able to pitch, play an infield and outfield position. We will rotate players around but often find certain positions that the players are better suited for and more likely to excel at. At this age, knowing how to play all positions is important to the success of the team.

  • We want athletes – our program is lighter in the fall and early winter to allow the boys to play other sports. We want our players to play multiple sports throughout the year with the priority to be baseball in the spring. Multiple sports help them develop as athletes and teammates.

  • Evaluations – we provide the boys with feedback and evaluations after each season (Fall and Spring). These evaluations include what the players do well but also what they need to do to get better. They are then responsible for working to improve during the off-season.

  • Pitching – we monitor our pitch counts and adhere to major league guidelines on rest periods.  We follow these guidelines to keep the boys’ arms healthy for the long term. We DO NOT want the boys having arm issues as they approach high school. Coach Jason Meisch is a former college pitcher and pitching coach.

  • Hitting – we go to small group hitting for 10 weeks. This more individualized instruction allows for players to develop going into and throughout the season. The hitting coach (see below for more detail) is provided with video of in-game at bats so he can determine what to focus on. We also have access to batting cages with pitching machines which we use as a team.

  • Mental Toughness – we don’t expect our players to be perfect. We want players who own their mistakes and help pick up their teammates after a mistake. The goal is to learn from our mistakes and move on.

  • Team Building – we want the boys to have fun with each other. We will have activities for the players to enjoy outside of practices and games. These activities include pool parties, attending other sporting events, BBQs with other teams and more.

Our Program:

Our team goal is winning our league championship and competing at a high level consistently.

Our program throughout the year involves a combination of games, scrimmages, team practices, and individual or small group instruction.

We do not have paid coaches, which allows us to use the player fees for team and small group instructions (team workouts, pitching and hitting). Our costs are a lot less than most travel programs, our players can use that savings on individual instruction to develop wherever their need may be.

Fall (August - October):

We have a light fall with a focus on practice and development. We have scrimmages and tournaments that we approach as practices to develop our players. After the fall, we evaluate each player and provide them and their parents feedback on what they do well and what they need to work on.

Practice once a week usually Wednesday

Team hitting session –once a week

Scrimmages and Tournaments – our focus is on development and not winning during this period. We will pitch a lot of players and try players out in different positions.

Off/Rest (Nov-Dec)

We take a period off usually in November and December from baseball activities to allow the boys a break. We resume workouts in mid-January.

Winter (January-February):

We use the winter as a time to start preparing for the spring season as a team while also beginning the small group instructions for more individualized pitching and hitting.

Team practices starting mid-January for 6 weeks. Every Sunday for 2 hours at Training HQ – work on fundamentals, throwing, fielding, hitting, pitching and etc… Each week, we cover a different aspect of the game to get the boys ready for the spring. Sessions are led by youth coach Niko Sanchez with support from the Rockets coaches.

Pitching – every player needs to be able to pitch. Being able to pitch and being confident in your arm will make them better players. We will do team or small group pitching starting in late winter. We will have a weekly indoor session where we work specifically on pitching.

Small Group Hitting starts the last week of February – we will begin small group hitting instruction with Coach Patty Hisle (University of Maryland) at Training HQ. These will be in groups of 3-4 for an hour to allow for individualized hitting instructions.

Spring Season Training (March – late June):

Team practices every Wednesday from 5-7:30 in Rockville (Field TBD)

Small Group Hitting – continued small group instruction with Patty Hisle

Team Hitting – batting cages

Scrimmages – we plan to add scrimmages before and during the season which will allow us to develop more pitching and players at other positions.

Video Analysis – we will use video to send to the hitting and pitching instructor to evaluate and provide feedback.

Spring Games/Tournaments:

MCBA Season (Priority) – about 14-18 games with a double elimination tournament at the end of the season. Our goal is to be a strong team in MCBA and compete for a title in the regular season and playoffs

Local Tournaments – 3-5 local tournaments
